On Monday, the Indian selectors announced the World Cup squad for Indian cricket team. After trying Rayudu for 2 years at number 4, the selectors went for Shankar who has played less than 10 ODIs for India.
In the press conference, MSK Prasad went on to elaborate on the choice between Karthik and Pant
The situation that was discussed among the selection committee, one of them will play in the XI provided MS is injured. So under such situations, in crunch matches, who is the best guy who can handle the pressure? That is the reason that went in favour of Dinesh Karthik. Pant is full of talent. There’s a lot of time for him. It’s just unfortunate that he’s missed out.Under pressure, we have seen Dinesh Karthik finishing matches. That scored for him.
“To begin with, he will only be a reserve opener, but if the team management needs, he can bat in the middle order too.” – MSK Prasad
Four extra fast bowlers will travel with the team. They will serve the dual purpose of bowling in the nets and also stay as standby should there be an injury.
After the Champions Trophy we have tried quite a few middle-order batsmen, which also included Karthik, Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey. We did give a few more chances to Rayudu but Vijay Shankar gives three dimesnions. He can bat, if the conditions are overcast he can bowl, plus he is a fielder. We are looking at Vijay Shankar as a No. 4. Now we have plenty of options for that slot.”
MSK Prasad, chief of selectors, says that Dinesh Karthik’s wicketkeeping has shunted Rishabh Pant. “Wicketkeeping also matters. That is the reason why we went with Dinesh Karthik otherwise Rishabh Pant was also there.”
As per Harsha Bhogle, the squad can be changed before 23rd May
